One of the first things they say for new comic artists is to tell short stories. Of course I started with a multi volume nightmare and regretted it, until now.
Songbirds is also a family saga, so the story takes place across multiple generations. I don’t show everything that happened, but the past constantly informs the present. The same can be said for Edge of Dawn, which has reincarnation thrown into it as well. Another theme I explore is different types of love. I know there are plenty of great short stories about love, but I find it interesting to view love over time. There is this romantic idea of a constant never changing love, but I think it’s more complicated in most cases.
Finally, reading through a long series can be very satisfying. Spending a long time with the characters and the setting can be very special.
